THE NIGERIAN STORY
Episodes
We aired 12 episodes in 2004 with 29 winners; 37 episodes in season 2 with 83 winners; 52 episodes in season 3 with 98 winners. In season 4, our richer, bigger and better season with MTN, the Sunday show was introduced, there by airing 86 episodes, this was a great development but season five superseded what came out of season 4, with 104 episodes. In the history of WWTBAM season 5 produced our first 5 Million Naira winner – Osahon Osazuwa and 104 episodes were aired in all. Season 6 started in August and I bet you we have greater things to offer our viewers, watch out.
We have had four editions of the Valentine Specials with couples as contestants, one edition of the Parent/Child Special, two editions of Children’s Special, one edition of Celebrity Specials and two fantastic edition of Who Deserves to Be a Millionaire?
Contestants
We had 340 contestants in the hot seat in the first four seasons with numerous other Fastest Finger First stage contestants who didn’t make it to the hot seat, in season five we had 736 contestants but only 174 got in the hot seat.
Our Winners
A total of N332, 141,000 had been won on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? In Nigeria as at the end of season 5 by 514 show winners, over 2,430 home play winners and about 3,639 audience winners.
As of august 2009, WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? Nigeria had produced 57 millionaires with a poet, Osahon Osazuwa winning the highest amount of 5million, 9 people winning 2 million and 47 other contestants won 1 million each.
Our very first millionaire was Quadri Arasi in January 2005 in season 2, other millionaires mainly from season 5 include Umar Angibi, Francesca Edegbere, Ayoade Oluwasanmi, Amolo Nkechi, Elvis Ahaonu, Masi Charles Ogadah Ejike and a host of others.
We have also had 71 other contestants winning 500,000 and numerous others winning various sums in the past 5 seasons of WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? Nigeria.
In all, contestants are basically from Lagos, and a few across the nation except for six states from the north that are not represented, they are Taraba, Katsina, Kebbi, Jigawa, Gombe, and Nassarawa state. This could be due to poor network coverage. Statistically, we had about 83% male as against 17% females, it could be due to the fact that ladies shy away from the television.
In season five, the show was dominated by Students consisting 132 of the total number of all contestants, self employed – 123, civil servants/public servants – 84, Teachers 43 and a few from other professions ranging from accountants to Engineer, clergymen and even the unemployed. The show cuts across all professions with no exception.
